Heat get rings, then win over Celtics, 120-107

MIAMI (AP) ? LeBron James got cramps, Ray Allen was snubbed and Dwyane Wade was steaming.

None of that spoiled the Miami Heat mood on ring night.

Wade scored 29 points, James finished 26 points and 10 rebounds while missing much of the second half because of cramps in both legs, and the reigning NBA champion Heat beat the Boston Celtics 120-107 on Tuesday night in the season opener for both teams.

There were actual fireworks before the game to close the ceremony where the Heat got their championship rings and raised their title banner. There also were plenty of figurative fireworks late, first with Boston almost digging out of a 19-point hole and, after the outcome was decided, Rajon Rondo flagrantly fouling Wade by wrapping his arms around his neck on a drive.

In the end, though, the first Celtics-Heat matchup of this season was like the final one of last season ? with Miami winning.

"It was good to cap this night off with a win," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "It was an emotional time for all of us in our organization."

Even for the newcomers, like Allen. He scored 19 points ? needing only seven field goal attempts ? in his first game with Miami since leaving Boston over the summer. Chris Bosh had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Miami.

Allen got chants from the Heat crowd, which is nothing new. Except this time, they were positive.

"Never thought I'd hear that here," Allen said.

Paul Pierce scored 23 points, Rondo finished with 20 points and 13 assists, and Leandro Barbosa scored 16 for Boston. The Celtics, who lost to the Heat in last season's Eastern Conference finals, were not on the court for the ring ceremony.

They almost wrecked the festive mood with a late comeback.

An 11-2 run late in the fourth quarter got Boston within 111-107 on Courtney Lee's layup with 2:09 left. That was the last Celtics' hurrah ? Bosh scored the game's next seven points, sealing it for Miami.

"I thought they were the aggressor the whole game," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "They got on the floor where they wanted to get on the floor. They took us out of stuff that they wanted to."

Rashard Lewis scored 10 points for Miami, which held on even while James, last season's MVP of both the regular season and NBA Finals, was in the locker room for the second time because of the cramps, first in his right leg and then his left.

"It's not an all-the-time thing," James said. "I'm not too worried about it."

The Heat got their championship rings from owner Micky Arison before the game, then watched the banner get hoisted to the rafters. More emotion came late, when Wade drove past Rondo ? and the Celtics guard grabbed Wade around the neck. Wade appeared as though he was ready to throw the ball at Rondo in retaliation, and stopped himself.

"I thought he hooked me," Rondo said.

Wade had a different opinion.

"It was a punk play by him," Wade said. "The league will take care of it. He clotheslined me, with two hands."

So Rondo raised eyebrows by putting hands on Wade. Kevin Garnett made news by not offering his hand to Allen.

As Allen entered the game for the first time, he trotted toward the Boston bench, exchanging a handshake, embrace and a few words with Rivers, who hasn't hidden his displeasure about his former shooting guard's decision to sign with Miami and didn't sound certain before the game how he would react when he saw Allen in Miami colors. Allen then briskly shook hands with a few assistant coaches.

But when Allen tried to engage Garnett, the mutual pleasantries ended. Allen tapped Garnett on the shoulder as he sat on the Boston bench; Garnett didn't even flinch, staring straight ahead, refusing to acknowledge the gesture in any way.

"I was just trying to focus as much as I could. I am such an intense person," Garnett said. "It was a blank. Obviously he's on the other side. It's time to play the game, man."

Allen didn't seem flustered. His first shot in a Miami uniform was ? what else? ? a corner 3-pointer, which swished.

"He was by himself in the corner," Rivers said. "You'd think we'd know better."

Miami controlled much of the first half, taking a 62-54 lead after James went by Pierce and Garnett for a two-handed dunk and yell for the crowd.

The first Heat angst of the season came in the third quarter, when James walked slowly to the bench after a timeout with 4:40 remaining, favoring his right leg and then headed out the tunnel toward the locker room.

When he left, the Miami lead was 79-70.

When he returned to open the fourth quarter, the lead was 93-76. The Heat scored the final eight points of the third, with Bosh, Allen, Mario Chalmers and Lewis all scoring in the final 2:17 to give the Heat their biggest lead of the game.

James ? who was dealing with a cramping issue, like he experienced at times in last season's NBA Finals ? opened the fourth quarter with a jumper to extend the run to 10-0, and Miami seemed well on its way. But he returned to the locker room a short time later, the cramps having flared up again.

"Once you start cramping, there's nothing you can do about it," James said.

Jeff Green, who had season-ending surgery for an aortic aneurysm last January, played in a game that counts for the first time since May 11, 2011 ? also in Miami, when the Heat ousted the Celtics from that season's playoffs. Green finished with three points in 23 minutes.

NOTES: Wade passed the 15,000-point mark for his career early in the second quarter, becoming the 123rd player in NBA history to reach that mark, according to STATS LLC. ... Rondo had at least 10 assists for the 25th straight regular-season game. ... The Celtics allowed 62 points in the first half; they gave up 62 or more only seven times in 379 regular-season and playoff games over the past four seasons. ... Miami players wore sneakers with gold somewhere in the color scheme; James' were primarily gold ? in honor of the ring ? and trimmed in white and red.

Does Your Home' s Exterior Need a New Paint Job?

Last updated 5 hours 6 minutes ago

The next time you drive up to your house, take a close look at the paint. Has weathering taken a toll on it? In most cases, even a top-of-the-line paint job doesn?t last much longer than a decade. If you?re overdue for a new paint job, a qualified painting contractor can help. Here are some signs that indicate that your house could benefit from a lustrous new coat of paint:

The colors are looking dull. If your home?s exterior is beginning to look dull and washed-out, a fading paint job could be the culprit. This could be the perfect opportunity to try out a new shade for your home. Even if you like the current color, however, repainting your walls with a bright coat of new paint could be exactly what you need to revitalize the appearance of your home and make your neighbors envious.

You notice chalking on the walls. If your painted walls have developed a fine chalky residue, it?s a sign that your current coat of paint is nearing the end of its natural lifespan, and that the components of the paint are breaking down. This happens most frequently with cheap paint jobs, but weathering can accelerate the process.

The paint is beginning to peel. A high-quality coat of paint doesn?t just improve your home?s appearance; it also helps keep moisture out of the walls. When the paint starts to peel, moisture can infiltrate your wood and create the need for repairs. At this point, you should have a professional new paint job done as soon as possible to avoid potential damage to your walls.

When you need a painting contractor for your home, contact the experts at Superior Pro Home Improvement. We have been providing outstanding home repair work to the greater Atlanta community since 1998, from painting to siding to replacement windows. Cornell Offers a Virtual Peak at its Upcoming New York City Tech Incubation Campus

NYC Tech is expected to be the city's answer to entrepreneurial programs at Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

cornell, new york, education, energy, greenCORNELL NYC TECH: NYC Tech's initial building will include six classrooms and plenty of open workspace. It is also expected to earn platinum certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) group and be the largest "net-zero" energy building in the eastern U.S. Image: Courtesy of Cornell NYC Tech

Cornell University's plan for a new high-tech, applied-science campus on an island in New York City's East River moved to the next phase on Monday when the city kicked off a seven-month review process to determine whether NYC Tech can break ground on its first building in 2014. Pending approval, that building will be a five-story, 14,000-square-meter academic center consistent with the school's hands-on approach to learning.

The energy-efficient building will include just six classrooms, devoting most of its area to open work spaces where lessons can be transformed into entrepreneurial ideas and prototypes. As designed by Morphosis Architects, Inc., NYC Tech's initial building is expected to earn LEED Platinum designation from the leadership in energy and environmental design certification program, its highest rating, and will be the largest "net-zero" energy building in the eastern U.S., producing as much energy as it consumes thanks primarily to solar panels and geothermal wells.

If all goes as planned construction near the southern end of Roosevelt Island?a 52-hectare sliver of land in the East River between Manhattan and Queens?would begin by April 2014, pending the outcome of a City Council vote.

Cornell has already put in motion various pieces of its plan. Earlier this month, the enrollment process began for the school's first offering?a one-year master of engineering degree that begins in January in temporary quarters. This program will be housed in a space in Manhattan that Google donated to NYC Tech for use until the Roosevelt Island campus opens in 2017. Initially, the island campus will support several hundred students. By the time its 18.6-hectare complex is fully operational in 2037, the program is expected to be able to accommodate as many as 2,000 students.

There is no specific application deadline for the new program. NYC Tech dean Daniel Huttenlocher says only that the school will be admitting a "handful of students"?in part because there are only four faculty members for what he calls the program's "beta" class. Among the instructors is Deborah Estrin, a computer science professor and founding director of the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing at the University of California, Los Angeles. Former Twitter chief technology officer, Greg Pass, is also on board as NYC Tech's entrepreneurial officer.

Cornell, in partnership with Technion?Israel Institute of Technology, will eventually offer three interdisciplinary two-year master of applied science curricula as part of the NYC Tech program. The "connective media" offering will address the rapid changes in information sharing and its impact on society. Two other curricula are still pending approval by the university. "Healthier life" will focus on developing promising technologies to promote healthier living and improve the quality of health care while addressing issues that are driving up health-care costs. "Built environment" will engage students in the challenges of building environmentally friendly buildings and structures.

NYC Tech will also offer Cornell master and doctoral graduate degrees in fields including computer science, information science, electrical and computer engineering, and operations research and information engineering. Another expected course of study is an accelerated MBA program for students who have an advanced technical degree.

Each of the multidisciplinary degrees will have a similar structure that consists of four days each week devoted to engineering and entrepreneurship studies. Fridays, however, will feature a practicum that encourages students to consider the practical applications of their work and exposes them to other disciplines?such as law and design?that will prove useful as these budding entrepreneurs consider their postgrad careers.

Skydiver breaks sound barrier

An Austrian daredevil leapt into the stratosphere from a balloon hovering near the edge of space 24 miles (38 km) above Earth on Sunday, breaking as many as three world records including the highest skydive ever, project sponsors said.

Cheers broke out as Felix Baumgartner, 43, jumped from a skateboard sized shelf outside the 11-by-8-foot (3.3-by-2.4 metre) fiberglass and acrylic capsule that was carried as high as 128,000 feet by an enormous balloon.

"We love you Felix!" screamed the crowd as he plunged through the stratosphere.

Video: Skydiver gears up to break parachute jump record (on this page)

His body pierced the atmosphere at speeds topping 700 miles per hour, appearing to achieve another of his goals: to become the first skydiver to break the speed of sound, according to the project website. He sped toward Earth on the 65th anniversary of legendary American pilot Chuck Yeager's flight shattering the sound barrier on Oct. 14, 1947.

"Looks like he probably broke Mach," project commentator Bob Hager said, referring to Mach 1, more than 690 miles per hour, used to measure the speed of sound.

Baumgartner broke records for the highest altitude manned balloon flight and the highest altitude skydive before landing safely on the ground and raising his arms in a victory salute about 10 minutes after he stepped into the air.

As his teary-eyed mother, father and girlfriend watched on monitors miles below, Baumgartner prepared to jump from the pressurized capsule by going through a checklist of 40 items with project adviser Joe Kittinger, holder of a 19-mile high (30 km) altitude parachute jump record that Baumgartner smashed.

Earlier in the flight, he expressed concern that his astronaut-like helmet was not heating properly.

"This is very serious, Joe," said Baumgartner as the capsule, designed to remain at 55 degrees Fahrenheit ascended in skies where temperatures were expected to plunge below -91.8 F (-67.8 C), according to the project's website. "Sometimes it's getting foggy when I exhale. ... I do not feel heat."

Baumgartner's ascent into the stratosphere took about 2 1/2 hours.

The 30 million-cubic-foot (850,000-cubic-metre) plastic balloon, is about one-tenth the thickness of a Ziploc bag, or roughly as thin as a dry cleaner bag.

Militarization of Rape in American Society ? Sociology Lens

Sexual harassment, assault, and rape are topics that are very difficult to discuss. ?American society has taken strides to develop programs, protocols, and legal actions to help victims of these heinous crimes. Despite these efforts, there are still environments where women and men experience this act of violence at disproportionately high rates. In the newly released documentary,?The?Invisible War, we are exposed to the high incidence of rape in the United States military.

The documentary opens up with a caption that reads: ?All statistics are taken from government studies.? The main subjects of the film are a group of individuals who were victims;?all were raped while serving in the military. The film makes a remarkable contribution by pinpointing the loopholes in the military?s prosecution system, while making viewers aware of how serious rape in the military is, and how thousands have been able to get away with committing this crime.

According to government statistics, there was a reported 2,039 rape allegations during 2009 and 2010.? This number is not representative of the total cases: There could be hundreds, or even thousands more women and men who did not report incidents. Of those 2,039 rape allegations only 147 resulted in rape or serious sexual assault convictions.

So what happened to the 1892 other allegations? Please refer to the breakdown taken from the documentaries? website, notinvisible.org.

?

Source:http://www.notinvisible.org/policy

When I saw these statistics, I couldn?t believe the number of cases that get dismissed or funneled into different types of actions.

Other than providing statistical evidence of rape in the military, the film comments on power and masculinity in American society.? According to one of the victims, Kori Cioca, she was the only woman among a group of 8 men while serving in the Coast Guard. In a recent interview on national television, Cicoca said that she thinks her supervising officer raped her for ?power,? claiming ?he hated her and spit on her multiple times.? After Cioca was raped, she reported the incident to a superior, but nothing happened to her perpetrator. According to rape victims, they are often kicked out of the military, while the offender continues to serve with no consequences against their actions.

In all, the film gives awareness to the issue of rape in the military. I highly recommend the film, and feel it is ideal for any course focusing on gender in society.

Man behind anti-Muslims film denies violating probation

Mona Shafer Edwards / AP

This Sept. 27 courtroom sketch shows Mark Basseley Youssef, right, talking with his attorney Steven Seiden in court. Youssef was behind an anti-Muslim film that sparked violence in the Middle East.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Updated at 5:44 p.m. ET: LOS ANGELES --?A California man who was behind an anti-Muslim film that sparked violent protests in the Middle East denied on Wednesday he violated his probation stemming from a 2010 bank fraud conviction.?

U.S. District Judge Christina Snyder ruled that?Mark Basseley Youssef will remain in custody and?scheduled an evidentiary hearing for Nov. 9.?

Youssef, 55, has been in a federal detention center since Sept. 28 after he was arrested for eight probation violations and deemed a flight risk by another judge. Prosecutors said Youssef lied to his probation officers about his real name and used aliases.?

Youssef answered "deny" eight times when the judge asked him to respond to the allegations, which include lying to the probation officer about his role in the making of the controversial 13-minute "Innocence of Muslims" movie clip.

Youssef fled his home in the Los Angeles suburb of Cerritos and went into hiding when violence erupted in Egypt on Sept. 11 over the trailer of "Innocence of Muslims" that was posted on YouTube. The trailer depicts Mohammad as a religious fraud, womanizer and pedophile.

The unrest spread, killing dozens, and enraged Muslims have demanded severe punishment for Youssef, with a Pakistani cabinet minister offering $100,000 to anyone who kills him.?The violence coincided with a separate attack on U.S. diplomatic facilities in Benghazi that killed four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya.

Watch the most-viewed videos on NBCNews.com

Youssef's attorney, Steven Seiden, asked the court during Wednesday's brief hearing that his client be taken out of protective custody at the federal prison and released into the general population. Snyder ordered the prosecutor to meet with personnel at the federal Bureau of Prisons to determine whether that can be done, Southern California Public Radio reported.

"My client was not the cause of the violence in the Middle East," Seiden said after Wednesday's hearing. "Clearly, it was pre-planned and it was just an excuse and a trigger point to have more violence." ??

A judge will decide whether or not Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, the producer behind the 'Innocence of Muslims' film, violated the terms of his 2010 conviction on bank fraud charges. NBC's Savannah Guthrie reports.

Youssef, a Christian originally from Egypt, was convicted of bank fraud in 2010 and sentenced to 21 months in prison. After he was freed, he was barred from using computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer. He also wasn't supposed to use any name other than his true legal name without the prior written approval of his probation officer. ??

"It will be interesting to see what the judge does and what the reaction is around the world,'' Stan Goldman, a Loyola Law School professor, told Reuters. ? ?

Goldman said attorneys for Youssef could argue the terms of his 2011 release from prison did not apply directly to his recent activities, in which people associated with the film have said he misrepresented himself. ?

"It's not exactly like an armed robber on probation, getting caught with an automatic weapon in his possession. It's a little more technical,'' Goldman said.

At least three names have been associated with Youssef since the film trailer surfaced -- Sam Bacile, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula and Youssef. ??

Court documents show Youssef legally changed his name from Nakoula in 2002, but he never told federal authorities while he was being prosecuted for check fraud. Orange County Superior Court documents show he wanted the change because he believed Nakoula sounded like a girl's name.? ?

Youssef sought a passport in his new name but still had a California driver's license as Nakoula, authorities said.? ?

Authorities said Youssef used more than a dozen aliases and opened about 60 bank accounts and had more than 600 credit and debit cards to conduct the check fraud scheme.? ?

Bacile was the name attached to the YouTube account that posted the video.

The probation issues were the latest of Youssef's legal woes. Cindy Lee Garcia, an actress who says she was duped into appearing in the anti-Islam film, has sued him, identifying him as the film's producer. Garcia also named YouTube and its parent company Google as defendants.? ?

Google has refused to remove the film from YouTube, despite pressure from the White House and others, though the company has blocked the trailer in Egypt, Libya and other Muslim countries.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Kremlin calls in top Russian protest leader for questioning

Experts say that the Kremlin's probe into Sergei Udaltsov ? launched after a documentary accused him of trying to undermine the government ? is meant to discredit him and other protest leaders.

By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / October 9, 2012

Russian left-wing leader Sergei Udaltsov has been summoned for "questioning" by the Kremlin's powerful Investigative Committee on Wednesday, after a murky documentary film broadcast Friday on the state-run NTV network accused him of plotting to overthrow President Vladimir Putin using funds provided by a Georgian parliamentarian and anti-Putin business exiles in London.

Mr. Udaltsov predicted on his blog Saturday that the film was part of a Kremlin plan to charge him with treason, based on a new law that's working its way through the Russian State Duma that would redefine treason to include almost any political activist who works with foreigners against Russian national security interests as defined by the authorities.

"The existence of any instances of financing from Western intelligence and... of 'coup attempts' would lead toward the opening of highly publicized criminal cases against me," Udaltsov, a veteran left-wing street protester, wrote.

On Monday, the State Investigative Committee summoned Udaltsov to appear and explain the accusations made in the film, after receiving a letter from the deputy chairman of the Federation Council, Russia's Kremlin-appointed upper house of parliament, requesting it to do so.

The makers of the documentary film, "Anatomy of a Protest 2," are not named in the credits, but most experts say it was almost certainly made using surveillance footage of Udaltsov gathered by the FSB security service.

The grainy and shadowy film shows someone who resembles Givi Targamadze, chairman of Georgia?s parliamentary committee for defense and security and a close ally of Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, talking in a smoke-filled room with a usually-obscured profile of someone who looks like Udaltsov. The Mr. Targamadze figure suggests a range of wild schemes, including seizing Russia's Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad, activating Chechen rebels to commit terrorist acts in Moscow, and doing "something" to disrupt Mr. Putin's 60th birthday jubilee (which passed peacefully on Sunday).

More substantially, Targamadze appeared to be offering Udaltsov financing of $50 million for protest activities, which would be contributed by disgraced Russian banker Andrei Borodin and other anti-Putin exiles living in London.

New Zero Electric Motorcycles for 2013

The electric fever has touched the automotive industry in more ways than you could even imagine. The world of motorcycling is currently undergoing a conversion from rumbling, smoky, non-economic engines to environmentally friendly propulsion systems. Now, Zero Motorcycles, one of the most fabled manufacturers of electric two-wheelers, has recently presented their new bikes for 2013.

The purposes of their newest creations are more power, higher speed and better fuel efficiency. The vehicles in this brand new series, the Zero MX for dirt tracks, the powerful Zero DS, the Zero XU for beginners, the 2013 Zero FX and the two-seater Zero S, will reportedly reach maximum speeds of around 95 mph (153 km/h) and will achieve ranges of up to 100 miles.

As you have read above, each model is destined for an individual purpose. For example, the beginners? bike Zero XU sports a 28 HP engine that can reach top speeds of around 77 mph (124 km/h) and can reach ranges of up to 70 miles. The Zero MX, which is quite similar in appearance to the previous, has been equipped with mud fenders, stiffer shocks and knobby tires, being specifically destined to be used on dirt surfaces.

It sports a bigger engine than the XU, though, being able to deliver 54 HP and reaching a maximum speed of 84 mph (135 km/h) on dusty roads. And there?s the Zero S, a stunning two-seater motorcycle which will actually be one of the top electric bikes in the world. It can reach top speeds of 95 mph (153 km/h) and, if driven carefully and not too fast, ranges of up to 137 miles in cities.

In terms of costs, the figures are fortunately not as high as we expected. For example, the Zero XU, the least costly of the lot, will reportedly start at $7,995, while the Zero DS and Zero S will go as high as $13,995.

No more paninis on the piazza? Rome bars tourists from eating at historical sites

Thinking of emulating Audrey Hepburn in the 1953 romantic comedy 'Roman Holiday' by eating a gelato on the Spanish Steps? Think again. It could prove to be a very expensive ice cream.

It is one of the simplest, most affordable pleasures of any visit to Rome: tucking into a piece of pizza, or a panino stuffed with prosciutto and mozzarella, while marveling at the city?s ancient monuments. But not anymore.

As of this week, anyone caught snacking around the Eternal City?s centuries-old monuments and archeological sites could find themselves landed with a fine of up to 500 euros ($650).

In an attempt to bring a greater level of decorum to a city not known for order, Rome city council has passed a decree banning tourists from snacking in the historic center, which recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.

That includes Piazza Navona, with its exquisite marble fountains, and the Pantheon, a vast Roman temple converted into a church. Other areas subject to the crackdown include Via dei Fori Imperiali, the broad avenue which links Piazza Venezia, Rome?s main square, with the Colosseum, the ancient arena where gladiators and slaves once fought.

Thinking of emulating Audrey Hepburn in the 1953 romantic comedy Roman Holiday by eating a gelato on the Spanish Steps? Think again. It could prove to be a very expensive ice cream.

"It is forbidden to encamp or erect makeshift shelters and stop to eat or drink in zones which have a particular historic or architectural value," reads the ordinance adopted by Rome city council this week.

The law is intended to ?guarantee the protection of areas of merit in the historic center,? it added.

In what one Italian newspaper, La Repubblica, called the start of a ?war on the panino," fines will range from 25 euros ($32) up to 500 euros ($650).

In many ways the new clamp-down reflects a schism in attitudes towards public eating between Italians and tourists.

Visitors may be happy to chow down on a slice of pizza or sandwich?on the steps of a Renaissance church or ancient Roman monument, taking a rest from the exhausting challenge of touring the city on foot. But that leaves most Romans aghast ? they rarely eat or drink on the street.

You don't see people guzzling enormous take-out coffees from paper cups; Italians go to a cafe for a cappuccino or a cafe macchiato, and drink it there, often standing up at the bar.

Eating in public is not done. I have even been told off for eating in a restaurant while reading a newspaper ? on the grounds that it will ruin my digestion, and that I should forget about work at least for an hour.

Rome is just the latest Italian city to try to curb indecorous behavior by tourists.

Similar bans have been adopted in Venice, where snacking is prohibited in St. Mark's Square and around famous landmarks, as well as Florence and Bologna.

But critics said the draconian new law could drive away tourists just as Italy needs them more than ever ? locals are spending less in restaurants, bars, and cafes as a result of a grinding recession and the imposition of austerity measures intended to tame the country?s 1.9 trillion euro national debt.

The center-right mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemanno, is acting like a ?sheriff? and ?transforming Rome into a city of rules and regulations,? said Angelo Bonelli, an opposition councilor in the city administration.

Others said Rome had more serious problems to contend with ? streets are often strewn with rubbish, illegal hawkers and touts harass tourists outside St. Peter?s Basilica and the Colosseum, and cars are allowed to double- or even triple-park.

?To start pestering tourists while they are eating lunch out of a bag really seems the last of our problems,? says Dario Nanni, a member of the left-leaning Democratic Party.

Italy has a somewhat checkered history when it comes to law enforcement, so whether tourists munching on sandwiches and slices of pizza really will be slapped with heavy fines remains to be seen.

From words to deeds: Why election matters

When you vote for Democrat Barack Obama or Republican Mitt Romney in November, you'll be voting for more than a president. You'll be casting a ballot for and against a checklist of policies that touch your life and shape the country you live in.

It can be hard to see, through the fog of negative ads, sound bite zingers and assorted other campaign nasties, that the election is a contest of actual ideas. But it is always so. A candidate's words connect to deeds in office.

Roll back to 2008. Obama was the presidential candidate who promised to get the country on a path to health insurance for all. He delivered. If you haven't noticed one way or another, soon you will.

And back to 2000. George W. Bush ran on a platform of big tax cuts. That's precisely what the country got. A decade later, taxes are lower than they otherwise would have been.

That's not to say you can count on Romney's checklist or Obama's to come into full being. You sure can't.

By nature and necessity, the presidency is in large part a creature of compromise and improvisation. The unforeseen happens (the terrorist attacks), or circumstances change (the December 2007-June 2009 recession), or things that the candidate sets out to do run into a buzz saw in Congress (way too many examples to mention). That's why promises are broken, priorities shift and intentions get swept away by the fistful.

Even so, you get what you vote for, probably about as often as not. And a lot of what you get, you will feel in a personal way, for better or worse, no matter how distant Washington seems from your world.

The wars called away people in your orbit, if not in your family. The spending that each candidate wants to do ? Romney vows military expansion, Obama would put more into education, for starters ? is bound to benefit many livelihoods in some fashion, at the risk of even deeper national debt. And read their fine print: Medicare won't be the same in the years ahead. Perhaps not Social Security, either. (There's that national debt, after all.)

Across the spectrum of issues, Obama and Romney have drawn contrasts and telegraphed divergent ways for the nation to go.

You can't believe everything you hear. But you can believe enough to know that Tuesday, Nov. 6, is a true day of decision.

In this series, Associated Press writers who cover subjects at stake in the election look at the positions of the candidates, the underlying issues ? and why it matters.

EDITOR'S NOTE _ An introduction to The Associated Press' "Why It Matters" series, which explores top issues confronting the nation in this presidential campaign season and their impact on Americans.

Mexican leftists free 80 prisoners in anger at vote loss

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Supporters of a Mexican leftist party, angry at losing a local election, went on the rampage and set 80 prisoners free from a detention center in the southern state of Chiapas.

Activists from the Party of the Democratic Revolution also set fire to the town hall in the town of Motozintla, near Mexico's border with Guatemala, in the rampage on Sunday, said Chiapas state interior minister Noe Castanon.

He said and police had arrested 31 party supporters, who had opened cell doors at the jail after Mexico's electoral tribunal ratified the victory of a Green Party mayoral candidate in Motozintla in a municipal election in July.

"They were really angry. They burned the town hall, two police cars and stole several vehicles," said an official at the detention center, who asked not to be named.

He said police rounded up 24 of the prisoners who had been freed in the rampage. The detention center houses inmates accused of crimes including rape and murder.

Apple posts fix for Verizon iPhone 5 Wi-Fi bug

1 day

Apple has rolled out a fix for an annoying (and potentially costly) issue affecting some Verizon?iPhone 5 owners.?

It seems that some folks who happen to use Verizon's service have been experiencing peculiar data?connectivity?issues. Sometimes their iPhones will rely on cellular data even though they are connected to a Wi-Fi network. This means that they may not always?get the fastest data?connection possible?? assuming that their Wi-Fi speeds are superior to the 4G LTE speeds, of course?? and that they're eating away at their monthly?data allotments when they don't have to.

The solution for this bug is pretty darn simple though. You just have to follow some instructions issued by Apple.

Just head into the Settings app on your iPhone 5, tap on "General" and select the "About" section. An alert should appear to inform you that your carrier settings have been updated. To complete the process, you'll have to tap "OK" on this alert, hold the sleep/wake button until the "slide to power off" prompt appears. At that point you should just power down your iPhone and then turn it back on.?

That's it.

To confirm that the?update worked properly, you can once again open the Settings app, tap on "General" and select "About." You should see "Verizon 13.1" in the "Carrier" section if everything went well.

That's one iPhone 5?issue fixed, several more to go. There's still talk of the device's tendency to chip and scratch?and?a?Maps app which even Apple CEO Tim Cook declared to have fallen short on the company's commitment to "deliver the best experience possible."?We'll have to see when and how Apple will address these woes.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.
