Homeland security chairman: FBI checking training angle in bombing
WASHINGTON (AP) ? The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee said Sunday that the FBI is investigating in the United States and overseas to determine whether the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing received training that helped them carry out the attack.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, is charged with joining with his older brother, Tamerlan, who's now dead, in setting off the shrapnel-packed pressure-cooker bombs. The bombs were triggered by a remote detonator of the kind used in remote-control toys, U.S. officials have said.
U.S. officials investigating the bombings have told The Associated Press that so far there is no evidence to date of a wider plot, including training, direction or funding for the attacks.
A criminal complaint outlining federal charges against Dzhokhar Tsarnaev described him as holding a cellphone in his hand minutes before the first explosion.
The brothers are ethnic Chechens from Russia who came to the United States about a decade ago with their parents.
"I think given the level of sophistication of this device, the fact that the pressure cooker is a signature device that goes back to Pakistan, Afghanistan, leads me to believe ? and the way they handled these devices and the tradecraft ? ... that there was a trainer and the question is where is that trainer or trainers," said Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, on "Fox News Sunday."
"Are they overseas in the Chechen region or are they in the United States?" McCaul said. "In my conversations with the FBI, that's the big question. They've casted a wide net both overseas and in the United States to find out where this person is. But I think the experts all agree that there is someone who did train these two individuals."
Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said he thought it's "probably true" that the attack was not linked to a major group. But, he told CNN's "State of the Union," that there "may have been radicalizing influences" in the U.S. or abroad. "It does look like a lot of radicalization was self-radicalization online, but we don't know the full answers yet."
On ABC's "This Week," moderator George Stephanopoulos raised the question to the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee about FBI suspicions that the brothers had help in getting the bombs together.
"Absolutely, and not only that, but in the self-radicalization process, you still need outside affirmation," responded Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich.
"We still have persons of interest that we're working to find and identify and have conversations with," he added.
At this point in the investigation, however, Sen. Claire McCaskill said there was no evidence that the brothers "were part of a larger organization, that they were, in fact, part of some kind of terror cell or any kind of direction."
The Missouri Democrat, who's on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, told CBS' "Face the Nation" that "it appears, at this point, based on the evidence, that it's the two of them."
Homemade bombs built from pressure cookers have been a frequent weapon of militants in Afghanistan, India and Pakistan. Al-Qaida's branch in Yemen once published an online manual on how to make one.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev was an ardent reader of jihadist websites and extremist propaganda, officials have said. He frequently looked at extremist sites, including Inspire magazine, an English-language online publication produced by al-Qaida's Yemen affiliate.
In recent years, two would-be U.S. attackers reported receiving bomb-making training from foreign groups but failed to set off the explosives.
A Nigerian man was given a mandatory life sentence for trying to blow up a packed jetliner on Christmas Day 2009 with a bomb sewn into his underwear. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab had tried to set off the bomb minutes before the Amsterdam-to-Detroit flight landed.
The device didn't work as planned, but it still produced smoke, flame and panic. He told authorities that he trained in Yemen under the eye of Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical American-born cleric and one of the best-known al-Qaida figures.

In 2010, a Pakistani immigrant who tried to detonate a car bomb in New York's Times Square also received a life sentence. Faisal Shazad said the Pakistan Taliban provided him with more than $15,000 and five days of explosives training.
The bomb was made of fireworks fertilizer, propane tanks and gasoline canisters. Explosives experts said the fertilizer wasn't the right grade and the fireworks weren't powerful enough to set off the intended chain reaction.

Everett Dutschke, 41, was arrested about 12:50 a.m. Saturday at his Tupelo home by FBI special agents in connection with the letters, FBI spokeswoman Deborah Madden said. The letters, which allegedly contained ricin, were sent last week to President Barack Obama, Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi and earlier to an 80-year-old Mississippi judge, Sadie Holland.
Madden said FBI special agents arrested Dutschke (pronounced DUHS'-kee) without incident. She said additional questions should be directed to the U.S. attorney's office. The office in Oxford did not immediately respond to messages Saturday.
Dutschke's attorney, Lori Nail Basham, did not immediately respond to phone or text messages Saturday. Basham said earlier this week that Dutschke was "cooperating fully" with investigators. Dutschke has insisted he had nothing to do with the letters.
Ryan Taylor, a spokesman for Wicker, said Saturday that "because the investigation is still ongoing, we're not able to comment."
Charges in the case were initially filed against an Elvis impersonator but then dropped. Attention then turned to Dutschke, who has ties to the former suspect and the judge and senator. Earlier in the week, as investigators searched his primary residence in Tupelo, Dutschke had remarked to reporters, "I don't know how much more of this I can take."
Charges initially were filed last week against Paul Kevin Curtis, 45, the Elvis impersonator, but then dropped after authorities said they had discovered new information. Curtis' lawyers say he was framed.
Curtis' attorney, Christi McCoy, said Saturday: "We are relieved but also saddened. This crime is nothing short of diabolical. I have seen a lot of meanness in the past two decades, but this stops me in my tracks. "
Dutschke and Curtis were acquainted. Curtis said they had talked about possibly publishing a book on an alleged conspiracy to sell body parts on a black market. But he said they later had a feud.
Judge Holland is a common link between the two men who have been investigated, and both know Wicker.
Holland was the presiding judge in a case in which Curtis was accused of assaulting a Tupelo attorney in 2004. Holland sentenced him to six months in the county jail. He served only part of the sentence, according to his brother.
Holland's family has had political skirmishes with Dutschke.
Her son, Steve Holland, a Democratic state representative, said he thinks his mother's only other encounter with Dutschke was at a rally in the town of Verona in 2007, when Dutschke ran as a Republican against Steve Holland.
Holland said his mother confronted Dutschke after he made a derogatory speech about the Holland family. She demanded that he apologize, which Holland says he did.
Steve Holland said he doesn't know if his mother remembers Curtis' assault case.

How the HTC One's back cover pops off, China style
When we first reported on the leaked image of China Unicom's HTC One with its back cover off, some questioned its authenticity since the phone touts its unibody design in other parts of the world. Well, as we found out at HTC's Beijing launch event on Wednesday, the Chinese variants (802w, 802t and 802d; ¥4,888 or about $790 for 32GB) do indeed have a removable cover for access to their dual SIM slots and microSD slot. But the question is: how does that piece of metal come off? It's simple: the usual micro-SIM tray at the top left side of the phone is replaced by a latch release (close-up shot after the break), and pushing it up would pop the cover open, as pictured above.
While this may technically not qualify for the "unibody" moniker, HTC's Vice President of China Lin Zurong told us that the removable cover and its accompanying parts at the top and bottom are cut out from the same piece of aluminum; so if you mix and match covers across two Ones of the same color, the fit or texture may not feel "right." Other than that, the Chinese One feels and looks very much the same as its foreign counterpart.
And finally, we asked whether the much anticipated red HTC One will be sold in China, to which a representative replied this was originally designed with other regions -- namely Japan -- in mind, so there's no confirmation as to whether China will get it just yet. Come to think of it, wouldn't the red HTC One be a nice fit for Verizon?

Brad Grey Discusses Piracy, Failure of DreamWorks Deal During 'Charlie Rose' Appearance

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Brad Gray kept dodging questions during an appearance on "Charlie Rose" Wednesday about why the Paramount's deal to purchase DreamWorks SKG ended with the exits of Steven Spielberg and David Geffen from the studio lot, but the tenacious anchor would not let the studio chief duck his queries.
Grey insisted he did not want to speak ill of anyone. He dissembled. He leaned back on the old standby, "I don't know."]
Pressed about reports that personality clashes with Geffen had doomed the pact, Grey countered with praise.
"My regard for David Geffen is extremely high," he said. "I think that David Geffen is one of the greatest, not only showmen, but one of the greatest businessmen."
He said that the $1.6 billion deal to purchase DreamWorks' library and bring its team to Paramount was critical to the studio, because it came at a time when there were very few films in its production pipeline. After Geffen and Spielberg's employment contracts ended, DreamWorks became an independent production company in 2008 with funding from Indian-based Reliance ADA Group.
"I can't tell you exactly what it was," Grey said, after Rose refused to let the subject drop. "I can only say that in life when you have the greatest expectations and you try to do things the right way, it doesn't always work out."
Grey insisted that the studio maintains strong ties with Spielberg, noting that the director is producing the next "Transformers" film for Paramount. He added that he expects they will work on future project together.
Grey also dipped his toe into the hot-button issue of piracy during the cordial twenty-five minute grilling. He noted that relations have started to improve between Silicon Valley and Hollywood despite the divide over issues like SOPA, the anti-piracy legislation that went down to defeat in Congress last year thanks to a grassroots campaign that was fostered by the online community.
"The biggest search engines in the world are trying to sort out how we handle this together to make sure that our artists and studios and all the people - all the thousands and thousands and thousands of people - at work are able to be legitimately paid and the product isn't being stolen," Grey said.

New York Times posts sharp 1Q profit decline
NEW YORK (AP) ? The New York Times Co. reported a sharp decline in its first-quarter earnings on Thursday mainly because businesses it sold last year were not included in the latest results.
The company earned $3.1 million, or 2 cents per share, in the January-March period. That's down 93 percent from $42.1 million, or 28 cents per share, in the same period a year ago.
Excluding severance costs and the results of businesses the company has sold, earnings were 4 cents per share in the latest quarter, matching Wall Street's expectations but down from 5 cents per share in the first quarter of 2012.
Revenue fell 2 percent to $465.9 million from $475.4 million.
Analysts, on average, were expecting revenue of $469.1 million, according to a poll by FactSet.
Advertising revenue dropped 11 percent to $191.1 million from $215.2 million.
Circulation revenue rose 7 percent to $241.8 million from $227 million, as the company attracted more people who signed up for digital and print subscriptions. It ended the quarter with 708,000 digital-only subscription accounts, up 45 percent from a year ago.
The Times Co.'s stock rose 21 cents, or 2.3 percent, to $9.21 in afternoon trading. The company's stock is up nearly 8 percent in 2013.
The company announced new products aimed at growing revenue. Its plans include lower-priced subscriptions as well as premium subscriptions, e-commerce and enhanced video.
"We mean to grow our business by launching new products and services based on the unique strengths of Times journalism and by investing in the rapid expansion of existing operations ? video and live events are examples ? where we're already seeing strong growth," said Times Co. president and CEO Mark Thompson, in a statement.
Games are another area of interest for the Times Co. Last year, the company expanded its famous crossword franchise with increased marketing of its Web and mobile crossword products. As a result, it added "a sizable number" of subscribers to those products, said Thompson on a conference call with analysts.
"Based on this experience and market indicators ?which point to healthy growth of casual gaming users, especially in mobile? we believe there is an opportunity to expand our footprint in this market," Thompson said.
The company said it expects circulation revenue to increase in the mid-single digits in the second quarter compared with a year ago. It anticipates advertising revenue trends will be "somewhat better" than they were in the first quarter.

A memorial to DNA pioneer Francis Crick has been unveiled at his former college at the University of Cambridge.
Attending the ceremony at Gonville and Caius was Dr James Watson, the man who shared the 1962 Nobel Prize with Crick for revealing the structure of DNA.
The engraved stonework, which depicts the double-helix structure of DNA, was unveiled exactly 60 years after the pair's seminal paper was published.
Their discovery has been hailed as one of the greatest in scientific history.
Crick's and Watson's groundbreaking work was published in the journal Nature on 25 April 1953.
Before the structure of DNA was unscrambled no-one had a clear idea how genetic replication - one of the cornerstones of life - worked.
'Something enormous'At the unveiling, in front of friends, colleagues and family, Dr Watson paid glowing tribute to his colleague, who died in 2004.
The 85-year-old American, who went on to direct the US arm of the Human Genome Project from 1988 to 1992, said: "Francis was the brightest person I ever interacted with.
"I met the great physicist [Richard] Feynman but I didn't understand what he was doing, so it didn't mean anything. Francis I could talk to.
"It was one of the most important papers ever published and we sort of knew that when it came out.
"I haven't lived the last 60 years thinking I'm a celebrity or my name would be put on the same par with [Charles] Darwin, but if I think about it I have to say, 'Yes, we did something big'."
Sir Alan Fersht, master of Caius College, said: "It's roughly equivalent to the theory of relativity, discovering the laws of gravity and it's the keystone of modern biology.
"They realised they'd done something enormous, but I'm not sure if they realised how important it has been in practical terms."
The men's work earned them the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1962, which they shared with Maurice Wilkins from King's College London.
Rosalind Franklin also played a key role in the discovery of DNA but died in 1958, before the prize was awarded.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. RNA molecules, made from DNA, are best known for their role in protein production. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), however, are short (~22) nucleotide RNA sequences found in plants and animals that do not encode proteins but act in gene regulation and, in the process, impact almost all biological processes from development to physiology to stress response.
Present in almost in every cell, microRNAs are known to target tens to hundreds of genes each and to be able to repress, or "silence," their expression. What is less well understood is how exactly miRNAs repress target gene expression.
Now a team of scientists led by geneticists at the University of California, Riverside has conducted a study on plants (Arabidopsis) that shows that the site of action of the repression of target gene expression occurs on the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), a cellular organelle that is an interconnected network of membranes essentially, flattened sacs and branching tubules that extends like a flat balloon throughout the cytoplasm in plant and animal cells.
"Our study is the first to demonstrate that the ER is where miRNA-mediated translation repression occurs," said lead researcher Xuemei Chen, a professor of plant cell and molecular biology and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute-Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Investigator. "To understand how microRNAs repress target gene expression, we first need to know where microRNAs act in the cell. Until now no one knew that membranes are essential for microRNA activity. Our work shows that an integral membrane protein, AMP1, is required for the miRNA-mediated target gene repression to be successful. As AMP1 has counterparts in animals, our findings in plants could have broader implications."
Study results appear today in the journal Cell.
Simply put, DNA makes RNA, and then RNA makes proteins. Specifically, RNA encodes genetic information that can be "translated" into the amino acid sequence of proteins. But noncoding RNAs RNAs that do not encode proteins are increasingly found to act in numerous biological processes. MicroRNAs are a class of noncoding RNAs whose main function is to downregulate gene expression.
Research on miRNAs has increased tremendously since they were first identified about 20 years ago. In the case of diseases, if some genes are up- or down-regulated, miRNAs can be used to change the expression of these genes to fight the diseases, thus showing therapeutic potential.
MicroRNAs are known to regulate target genes by two major modes of action: they either destabilize the target RNAs, leading to their degradation, or they do not impact the stability of the target RNAs, but simply prevent them from being translated into proteins a process known as translation inhibition. The end result of translation inhibition is that the genes do not get expressed. Just how miRNAs cause translational inhibition of their target genes is not well understood.
"We were surprised that the ER is required for the translational inhibition activity of miRNAs," Chen said. "This new knowledge will expedite our understanding of the mechanism of gene silencing. Basically, now we know where to look: the ER. We also suspect it is the rough ER portions that are involved."
Chen explained that the ER has two types: rough and smooth. Rough ER, which synthesizes and packages proteins, looks bumpy; smooth ER, which acts in lipid synthesis and protein secretion, resembles tubes. The ER protein AMP1, she said, is anchored in the rough ER.
"My lab has been conducting research on AMP1 for many years," she said. "And it's this protein that drew our attention to the ER. First, we realized that AMP1 is involved in miRNA-mediated translational inhibition. Then, since we already knew that AMP1 is localized in the rough ER, we shifted our focus to this organelle."
Next, her lab will attempt to crack the mechanism of miRNA-mediated translational inhibition. They will investigate, too, how miRNAs are recruited to the ER.

The end result of translation inhibition is that the genes do not get expressed. Just how miRNAs cause translational inhibition of their target genes is not well understood.
"We were surprised that the ER is required for the translational inhibition activity of miRNAs," Chen said. "This new knowledge will expedite our understanding of the mechanism of gene silencing. Basically, now we know where to look: the ER. We also suspect it is the rough ER portions that are involved."
Chen explained that the ER has two types: rough and smooth. Rough ER, which synthesizes and packages proteins, looks bumpy; smooth ER, which acts in lipid synthesis and protein secretion, resembles tubes. The ER protein AMP1, she said, is anchored in the rough ER.
"My lab has been conducting research on AMP1 for many years," she said. "And it's this protein that drew our attention to the ER. First, we realized that AMP1 is involved in miRNA-mediated translational inhibition. Then, since we already knew that AMP1 is localized in the rough ER, we shifted our focus to this organelle."
Next, her lab will attempt to crack the mechanism of miRNA-mediated translational inhibition. They will investigate, too, how miRNAs are recruited to the ER.

You can only listen to and read someone talk about how to properly wield a kitchen knife so many times before you really need to see it in action. Thankfully, the folks at FirstWeFeast have a series of animated GIFs that will show you exactly how to master your kitchen knife safely.

After shipwreck, Costa Concordia gets the musical treatment
The 2012 Costa Concordia cruise ship sinking is the loose inspiration for a new Bollywood-style musical to be filmed in Italy this summer.

In an initiative that may seem insensitive to some, an Indian film company will start shooting the movie in Italy over the next few weeks.
The film has no name yet, but it will be loosely based on the plight of the Costa Concordia, the luxury cruise ship which partially sank after ploughing into rocks off the tiny island of Giglio in January 2012.
Thirty-two people lost their lives in the accident, including a 5-year-old girl.
Basing an all-singing, all-dancing film on the tragedy may see ghoulish, but those behind the movie insist it will be done tastefully.
?It will be only loosely based on the sinking of the Costa Concordia,"?says Stefania Ippoliti of the Tuscan Film Commission, which is helping with the project.?"It?s about a group of people who are stranded on an island after a shipwreck.?It will be very light in tone, nothing like the actual disaster. It?s going to be a romantic comedy, not a tragedy.?
Location scouts are expected to arrive soon, with filming to start at the end of May or in early June.
It will be filmed somewhere in the Tuscan archipelago of islands ? not on Giglio itself, because of local sensitivities and the fact that the island has in effect become a giant naval shipyard, as a multi-national team of engineers works to refloat the wreck of the Concordia and tow it off to be scrapped on the Italian mainland.
Location scouts will instead look at some of the other islands in the archipelago ? possibly nearby Elba, where Napoleon was sent into exile, or tiny Capraia and Pianosa.
The film is to be made by?Sri Mishri Productions, a company based in Chennai in the southern Indian province of Tamil Nadu.
It won?t in fact, be a ?Bollywood? movie because that denotes movies made in Hindi by the film industry based in Mumbai, the city once known as Bombay.
Instead?it is part of a Tamil language genre of movies known as ?Kollywood," a nickname that combines Hollywood and Kodambakkam, a neighborhood in Chennai.
Perhaps surprisingly, the concept of Kollywood-meets-the-Concordia has been welcomed by at least one survivor.
Benji Smith, an American who was on his honeymoon on the Concordia when it went down, thinks it is a ?wonderful? idea.
?As long as the story is told well, I think each storyteller should choose the narrative structure and medium that communicates most clearly with their audience,? he says.
Mr. Smith, a computer scientist from Boston, is himself a storyteller ? he wrote a book about the sinking of the cruise liner in which he described how he and his new wife, classical musician Emily Lau, thought they were going to die on the night of the accident.
The book, "Abandoned Ship: An Intimate Account of the Costa Concordia Shipwreck," was self-published in January, just days before the one-year anniversary of the tragedy.
Preliminary hearings are currently taking place in a court in Grosseto, Tuscany, for the former captain of the ship, Francesco Schettino, who is expected to be sent to trial on charges of abandoning ship and manslaughter.

Syrian war increasingly drawing in Lebanon
BEIRUT (AP) ? As fighting rages just across the border, Lebanese are giving signs of joining the battle on rival sides of Syria's civil war ? Sunnis on the side of the rebels, Shiites on the side of the regime ? raising fears that Lebanon with its volatile sectarian divisions will be dragged into the conflict.
Two influential Lebanese Sunni clerics this week called on members of their community to wage "holy war" in Syria to defend their brethren. They accused Lebanon's Shiite Hezbollah group of sending fighters to attack Syrian Sunnis, who make up the backbone of that country's rebellion.
On Tuesday, around two dozen men lined up in the office of one of the clerics in the southern coastal city of Sidon, signing up to join the jihad.
In recent days, tensions have been fueled by heavy fighting inside Syria close to the border with Lebanon, where regime forces have made strong gains in a campaign to secure a corridor from the capital Damascus to the Mediterranean coast.
The Syrian military has been helped in the fight by Shiite Lebanese fighters who are supported by Hezbollah. The powerful Lebanese militant group says it is not sending fighters but supports the so-called "popular committees" that have joined the fighting to defend their fellow Shiites in Syria.
Rockets from Syria have hit mostly Shiite areas in Lebanon on daily basis, apparently from Syrian rebels in retaliation for Lebanese Shiite help to the regime forces. Rockets killed at least two people this week and are reaching deeper into Lebanese territory. There are also fears that Islamic militants among the Syrian rebels could carry out direct attacks in Lebanon in revenge for Hezbollah's support of the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
"Lebanon is on the edge of the cliff," warned lawmaker Sami Gemayel. "We are dragging the conflict from Syria into our country. It's like the border between the two countries no longer exist," he told reporters Tuesday.
Lebanon is sharply split between supporters and opponents of Assad, a legacy of decades of Syrian political and military dominance over its smaller neighbor. The split largely falls along sectarian lines, with Sunnis opposing Assad and Shiites backing him. That mirrors the divisions within Syria itself, where mainly Sunni rebels are battling Assad's regime, dominated by the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiism.
Since it began in March 2011, Syria's conflict has fueled local tensions between the communities in Lebanon, with bouts of street fighting and kidnappings.
In the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli on Monday, a group of Sunnis captured an Alawite man, stripped him to the waist, tied a rope around his neck as they paraded him through the streets. "I am an Alawite shabiha," was written on his bare chest, referring to Syria's feared pro-Assad militiamen.
In recent days, unknown assailants set fire to Alawite-owned shops and also hurled stones at a bus carrying Alawites in Tripoli, a predominantly Sunni city with a small Alawite community.
The intense fighting near the border has raised the temperature considerably.
The Qusair region where the fighting is taking place is strategic because it links the Syrian capital Damascus with the Mediterranean coastal enclave that is the heartland of Assad's Alawite sect. Syrian rebels accuse Hezbollah of fighting alongside Assad's troops and attacking rebels from inside Lebanese territory.
Hezbollah denies taking part in the civil war. But top Hezbollah official Nabil Kaouk said Monday that his group is "performing a national duty" toward Lebanese Shiites living in Syrian border towns and villages by supporting the "popular committees."
The head of the main Western-backed Syrian opposition group, the Syrian National Coalition, said Hezbollah's role in fighting amounted to "a declaration of war against the Syrian people."
"Shiite Lebanese should prevent their sons from killing Syrians. They should not fall victim to this conflict," he said Tuesday.
Syrian rebels have repeatedly called on Lebanese officials to control their side of the border. But Lebanon has been without a government since former Prime Minister Mikati stepped down last month over a political deadlock between Lebanon's two main political camps and infighting in his government.
Authorities are reluctant to send the army in large numbers to the border area, partly because of fears the military would get caught up in the violence and break up along sectarian lines, as it did during Lebanon's 1975-90 civil war.
On Monday, two leading Lebanese clerics issued religious edicts urging Sunni Lebanese to defend their brethren in Syria, saying Hezbollah had violated the Lebanese neutrality by taking part in fighting.
"We were opposed to any side getting involved in the Syrian revolution. But Hezbollah's insistence to support the despot Bashar Assad has left us with no choice," Sheik Ahmad al-Assir, one of Hezbollah's harshest critics, told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
Another Sunni cleric, Sheikh Salem al-Rafie issued an edict calling for a "general mobilization among Sunnis to protect Sunni brothers."
So far, the Sunnis lining up to join the fight in the Sidon office appeared to be few, in what may have been a symbolic gesture.
But many worry about escalating sectarian hatreds brewing across the country and the potential of being dragged into the war.
"It is not a question of if, only when and for how long," said Amin Rafie, a 43-year-old school teacher in Sidon on Tuesday.
Syria's conflict is grinding into its third year, with rebels controlling much of the north and east while the regime keeps a tight grip on Damascus, the Mediterranean coast and the major cities in the west, except the commercial hub of Aleppo, scene of a monthslong, destructive battle for control.
The fighting has exacted a huge toll on the country, killing more than 70,000 people, laying waste to cities, towns and villages and forcing more than a million people to flee their homes and seek refuge abroad.
In Syria, two bishops who were kidnapped while traveling outside Aleppo were released Tuesday, less than 24 hours after gunmen pulled them from their car and shot their driver dead.
The two kidnapped priests, Bishop Boulos Yazigi of the Greek Orthodox Church and Bishop John Ibrahim of the Assyrian Orthodox Church, were released Tuesday and arrived safely at their respective patriarchates in Aleppo, according to Greek Orthodox Bishop Tony Yazigi.
It was not immediately clear who kidnapped the men.
In Israel, a senior military intelligence official said that Assad used chemical weapons last month against rebels. It was the first time that Israel has accused the embattled Syrian leader of using his stockpile of nonconventional weapons.
"To the best of our professional understanding, the regime used lethal chemical weapons against the militants in a series of incidents over the past months," Brig. Gen. Itai Brun of Israeli military intelligence told a security conference in Tel Aviv. "Shrunken pupils, foaming at the mouth and other signs indicate, in our view, that lethal chemical weapons were used."
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, speaking in Brussels, urged NATO to prepare for the possible use of chemical weapons by Syria and called for alliance members to boost their assistance to the Syrian opposition. NATO member Turkey borders Syria and would be most at risk from such an attack. NATO has deployed Patriot missile batteries in Turkey.

EU governments ease Syria sanctions on oil to help rebels
LUXEMBOURG (Reuters) - European Union governments agreed on Monday to ease sanctions on Syria to allow for purchases of crude from the opposition, in hopes of throwing a financial lifeline to rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad.
The decision, taken at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg, will allow European importers to buy oil from Syria, if authorized by an opposition umbrella grouping.
The sanctions were first imposed in 2011 in response to Assad's brutal crackdown on pro-democracy protests. Two years later, the conflict is largely a stalemate, and an estimated 70,000 people have died.
"Anything that can help more resources to be available to people affected by the crisis of course is welcome," EU commissioner for humanitarian aid, Kristalina Georgieva, told Reuters on the sidelines of the meeting.
Buying Syrian crude will be complicated, because of security concerns and battered infrastructure, but officials said more financial help would be offered.
"It is important for us to send a signal that we are open to helping in other ways, in all the ways possible, including ways adding to the finances (of the opposition)," British Foreign Secretary William Hague told reporters as he arrived for Monday's meeting.

Are Teavana and Celestial Seasonings teas safe to consume ...
Recent lab testing of both Teavana and Celestial Seasonings teas had alarming results. I didn't realize it before, but tea can be a highly sprayed crop, leading to cups full of pesticides instead of just healthy antioxidants.

I will link to the full research release below, but here is a quick overview.?

Celestial Seasonings has bad quality control
91 percent of the Celestial Seasonings tea tested had pesticide residues exceeding the U.S. limits. One of the company's teas, Sleepytime Kids Goodnight Grape Herbal, contained 0.26 ppm of propachlor, which has no safe harbor limit under California's Proposition 65. (It is a known carcinogen.)

Other teas, including the "Wellness" tea line, were found to contain traces of propargite, also a known carcinogen, a developmental toxin, and which also has no safe harbor limit under California's Proposition 65. Apparently, the FDA has already issued two warning letters to Celestial Seasonings in regard to poor quality control. Meanwhile, thousands continue to drink the popular teas.

Although Celestial Seasonings gears its products toward those who want a healthy lifestyle, there are grave concerns with the quality of its products.

Teavana's tea is also high in pesticides and toxins
Celestial Seasonings is, after all, a less expensive tea. Are we really surprised that the tea isn't top-notch? But the price of tea isn't always evidence of quality control. Teavana is a company that sells loose tea for top price. It has also long claimed to be "pesticide-free," or organic or "European organic." The Teavana tea that I have sampled also tastes great.

It sounds good on paper, right?
?
The lab results for this company were not great, unfortunately. The tea was tested by an independent lab and 100 percent of it was found to contain pesticides. One tea, Monkey Picked Oolong, contained 23 pesticides. Strike one.
?
77 percent of the teas would fail European Union pesticide import standards, and would be banned from import. Strike two.
?
62 percent of the teas tested contained traces of endosulfan, a pesticide that has been banned by the U.S., China, the E.U., and 144 other countries because it has been linked to impaired fertility and could harm unborn babies. Strike three.
?
It's maddening, especially when you consider how the company promotes itself as toxin-free. But in some ways, I am not surprised. I bought a Teavana tea thermos, which has a design I absolutely love. But I wondered whether the company was purposely deceptive in how the employees were trained. I was told that it was a stainless steel product. But when I read through the package's fine print, it became clear that only the tea strainer is stainless steel, not the thermos itself. When I asked the employee about it, and pointed to what the package said, he grew confused. He said something along the lines of, "Well, the package does say that only the tea strainer is stainless steel, but when I was trained I was told that all of the metal was stainless steel, so I think it has to be." Deceptive? I think so. If it was all stainless steel, I am sure it would have said so clearly on the package. I think the employee was just saying what he had been told to say.

I thought about this when I read about how almost all of the employees said that Teavana was pesticide-free when asked. This was part of their training, and they had no reason to doubt its validity.

The source of information
So who paid for all of this testing? A short sell firm called Glaucus Research (you can read the reports here). In case you haven't heard of short sell firms before: in simple terms, they make financial bets against companies, so that if the stocks for these companies fall, they make money. Guess who Glaucus is?betting against??
Does this make Glaucus a biased source? Yes. Does it make the above untrue? No. Glaucus did not put out this information so all of the health freaks (like me) would know not to buy from these companies. But Glaucus released these findings to explain its investment against these companies. It also has analysis on other products from Hain (the flagship brand name that Celestial Seasonings is under). As it says in the group's disclaimer, "We are short sellers. We are biased. So are long investors. So is the company. So are the banks that raised money for the company. If you are invested (either long or short) in Teavana, so are you. Just because we are biased does not mean that we are wrong."

And, so far, although Teavana has had since November to refute the evidence presented against it, the company hasn't released any hard facts in its favor.

Better brands to purchase
I am not invested in either of these companies (long or short), but I do want to invest my consumer money into companies worth supporting. Teavana has lost my support, and Celestial Seasonings was already toward the bottom of the list, and it will stay there.

One company that I have enjoyed buying from is Mountain Rose Herbs. After reading through the lab testing of above, I am thankful for its commitment to test all of its organic (or wild-crafted) products for chemical and pesticide residues before selling. I have always been impressed with the quality of the products ? including Mountain Rose Herbs' line of teas ? when I have bought and used them.?
A tea that I am sipping right now is from a local brand, Tao of Tea, whose organic tea I have also really enjoyed. Tao of Tea's website says, "We are firm believers in the organic tea movement and have supported many small tea gardens and farmers to practice this style of agriculture. The tea industry in many parts of the world is known to use pesticides, often in high doses. Though the number is growing, only a small portion of tea gardens and tea farms are currently certified organic. We are proud to offer one of the largest selections of certified organic teas in the United States. Our teas and our facilities are duly inspected and certified by internationally accredited certifiers."?
Both of these companies will continue to get my support.

Eyes on with the Loewe AirSpeaker, premium Airplay speaker with a premium price to match
The Loewe AirSpeaker has been on the market for a little while now, but at the recent IFA Global Press Conference in Sardinia, the German manufacturer was on hand to show it off. Airplay compatible speakers aren't uncommon, but Loewe is a premium brand in the world of home electronics, and the AirSpeaker is no exception.
As you might expect from a premium product, good design is at the forefront. The AirSpeaker is supposed to look good in the home, as well as provide killer sound. There's no docking solution either, as the name implies, the AirSpeaker relies solely on Airplay. There's actually very little in the way of anything at all on the exterior. The rear of the unit houses the only 4 buttons along side the power cable which sits at the bottom, slightly recessed. Otherwise, it's all speaker.
Sadly, it wasn't possible on the show floor to get a good demonstration of the sound quality, so it remains an eyes on only. As a premium product, it also comes with a premium price. In the UK one of these will set you back a pretty hefty ?499.99. That's a lot, whichever way you look at it, but then the AirSpeaker is a high end product.
The AirSpeaker wasn't the only thing at the event of note from Loewe, though. During their press briefing they teased a forthcoming portable speaker system -- the Loewe Speaker 2go -- that will have Airplay as one of its streaming options. A release timeframe wasn't provided, but since the event was linked to the annual IFA show in Berlin, it's not unreasonable to think we might see it there in September.

Which Country Saw a 20,000% Increase in Clean Energy Investing ...
No, it?s not China.
If you only glance at clean energy investment in the past year, you?ll see a marked decline in most areas of the globe. But not all.
In the Pew Charitable Trust?s fourth annual report, Who?s Winning the Clean Energy Race? 2012 Edition, Pew and Bloomberg New Energy Finance found that while investment dropped from 2011 to 2012 in G20 countries, it was up by more than 50 percent in non-G20 countries.
And then there?s?South Africa. It?s easy to see big gains when you?re starting from nearly zero, and that?s exactly what?s going on in the country. Clean energy investment was up 20,000 percent to about $5.5 billion for 2012 in South Africa, with $4.3 billion for solar and most of the rest going to wind energy.
South Africa?s clean energy program relies largely on reverse auctions that challenge the market to bid in the lowest possible price for projects, said Ethan Zindler, head of policy analysis at Bloomberg New Energy Finance. The country is aiming to have 3.7 gigawatts of renewables by the end of 2016. South Africa?s investment catapulted it into the top ten from nearly last place.
The top dog, however, was clearly China.
In 2012, China took the lead with about $65 billion in investment out of $269 billion globally. ?It?s not quite a spectacular wind year for China,? said Zindler, ?but it still beats everyone else.?
China added 16 gigawatts of wind and more than 3 gigawatts of solar, with 2013 goals of 18 gigawatts and 10 gigawatts, respectively.
While China?s size and aggressive policies make it the leader in clean energy, it?s important to remember that China also leads as the world?s largest coal burner, accounting for nearly half of global coal consumption.
Investment was down in many of the other countries, but renewable project deployment has accelerated due to better financing models, falling prices and a flurry of activity in the lead-up to expiring support policies.
While China eclipses nearly every other country, Japan is also gaining momentum in clean energy after enacting a feed-in tariff. Zindler expects Japan to be second only to China for solar PV in 2013.
Even though 2012 was down, the overall trend is strong growth globally, said Phyllis Cuttino, director of Pew?s clean energy work. ?In countries with strong policy, they?re successful in attracting investment,? she said. In the U.S., ?we need more than a patchwork of state policies.?
One area where the U.S. led the G-20 was energy efficiency, which saw $2.5 billion in investment in 2012. With $200 million allocated in Obama?s proposed budget for efficiency programs and growing utility efficiency programs, this is one area where the U.S. has an opportunity to stay in the lead.
