Raising Kids that Craft (or not) | FIMBY

?

I have crafty kids. It's just what we do.

This time of year especially. For weeks leading up to Brienne's birthday C?line sequestered herself away in our bedroom - one of the few rooms in our home with a door - to sew.

And now with the Christmas gift giving season upon us there will be a lot more secret sewing and crafting going on.

Recently, when we went to our friend's farm for the weekend the kids took a small bin of supplies and their favorite new craft book (mailed to us from the Netherlands by a FIMBY reader). Along the way, we bought felt at the fabric store, and the kids arrived ready to get on their crafting groove.

The kids were worried they wouldn't be able to speak to their French-speaking friends but we knew crafting could be the common language.

Ever since that visit C?line has been e-mailing back and forth with her friends en Fran?ais et en Anglais photos of the craft projects they are doing.

People have asked me how to encourage their own children to be creative and I have shared those ideas already here on my blog: have good supplies, be willing to make the time for it, be ok with the mess it will create (teaching your kids to clean up their mess will help with this).

(It's interesting to note that even though I don't do as many crafty things, especially sewing and paper memory keeping, as I used to when my children were younger, our kids continue to craft on their own initiative.)

I wrote a little book about how you can nurture creativity in your own life, and honestly, the same advice I give to moms' applies to kids and people in general. The advantage kids have is that when they start creating from the time they are little they don't have the same hang-ups adults do - fear of failure and perfectionism being too biggies.

Encouraging creativity is near and dear to my heart and it's something that comes up in most of my coaching and online teaching. I think it's one of my core life messages right now.

Based on your suggestions during the teleconference, I've even started doing my own art again - which is my life's passion, but I thought I had to put it on hold until my kids were older. Instead, now we're doing it together. Yes, our house is much more peaceful and I'm even getting my own "battery recharged".

As an educator, I believe creativity is an important part of learning. As a human being and a mother, I believe creativity is simply a part of joyful and wholehearted living (see Bren? Brown's book The Gifts of Imperfection for more on this).

I was asked the following question in a recent interview:

There is always a lot of discussion about the need for creativity in our lives, but not as much on the subject of why. What do you believe mothers gain, both as individuals and as parents, from fostering their own creative spirit.

Here's my answer:

Joy. When you tap into that creative activity (or activities) that both challenge you and help you express yourself you have access to a sweet spring of joy.

Not all moments are joy of course (writing ebooks is NOT all joy). But the main reason I both nurture creativity and tune into the creativity in my days, e.g. arranging pottery just so on the table and taking a picture to share on my blog, is for the pure joy of it. The joy of beauty. The joy of being alive and having a gift to share.

My children also get immense pleasure from their creativity. The actual making of things brings them joy. Showing and giving their art to family and friends. Playing with their handmade toys. They do it because it brings them joy.

I believe we were created for joy and pleasure. For relationship and beauty. Nurturing creativity puts us back in touch with this.

What if your kids don't craft or fill-in-the-blank?

There are so many things that can bring creativity, joy, pleasure and beauty into our lives.

Music is one of those things. Did you know that none of our children play a musical instrument?

Some people might think this is a shame but our children haven't expressed an interest to learn an instrument and we decided this wasn't going to be one of the requirements of their home education.

Did you also know that learning never stops and people can learn new things all the time?

What this means is that if our kids one day want to learn how to play a musical instrument they can! If they want to learn to speak Japanese they can! I don't have to teach them all these things when they are knee high, nor do I have to hire someone to do so.

I don't have to carry the burden of exposing our children to every good thing before they are eighteen, training their young minds to speak three languages and play two instruments. They have their whole lives.

It may be sacrilege to say this but you don't have to give your children the perfectly well balanced and well rounded upbringing. In fact, trying to do so would be impossible because none of us are perfect.

You can build your family life and home learning environment on your family values, your children's interests and natural talents, your interests and talents, and your overall goals for your children's education. Yes. You. Can.

When your children leave your home they will build on this foundation, carrying forward some of the values and teaching you instilled and then add entirely new pieces according to their own desires and life mission. And won't that be fun. For them and for us.

Damien and I have already talked about the twists and turns our family life will take when our children come of age and choose their own path. We're excited about it! We're going to learn so much.

I think the reason parents, especially homeschooling parents, feel we have to teach it all when our kids are young is because we must carry a belief deep-down (so deep it's hard to acknowledge) that learning stops when kids reach a certain age. Or if not learning, the ability to study something you're interested in and pursue your dreams.

That freedom stops when you are an adult and if you haven't learned how to sew or haven't wrapped your brain around Newton's Laws by the time your eighteen, well that's just too bad. It's all over. Because now real life starts, and don't you know "in real life you don't get to determine your own course of action, you have responsibilities". And if you want to learn Latin, well too bad. If your homeschool mom didn't teach it to you when you were twelve, it's all over for you.

Do you hear what I'm saying?

We create because it brings us joy. We make useful things, and some not so useful things, and we learn important skills. We make time for creativity in our homeschool curriculum because it is one of our family's core values.

Does this mean you have to craft with your kids? Not at all. Maybe you bake with them instead, or play musical instruments together, take dance classes, or spin wool from your own sheep. Maybe you speak Japanese in the morning and conjugate Latin verbs in the afternoon.

If this is what you love, what brings your family joy, and is inline with your family values - then do it! And do it with gusto. Do it well, do it often. Do it to the glory of your creator.

And teach your kids this with your example - we never stop learning. The door is always open. We never graduate, though we may pass some exams along the way to show certain proficiencies (trust me, I want that surgeon to have passed their medical school exams).

Our children's childhood, foundational as it may be, it not "it" in terms of their learning window of opportunity.

Release yourself from that burden. Release them.

And then go make something. Just for the fun of it.

Saudi king seen on TV amid health questions

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? Saudi state television has broadcast the first public images of King Abdullah since the 87-year-old monarch underwent what was described as back surgery 11 days ago.

The video shows the king sitting down, as members of the royal family greet him and kiss his hand in a hospital suite in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

The Wednesday broadcast appeared aimed at quieting speculation about the overall health of Abdullah, a key U.S. ally in the region. The official Saudi Press Agency says the top-level delegation was "reassured" about Abdullah's recovery.

The king underwent more than 10 hours of surgery Nov. 17 for what officials said was a procedure to secure a loose vertebra.

The king had back operations in 2010 and twice in 2011.

Transformation at SWD Cricket : The Gremlin ? Daily online ...

This day marked the official handover of new Office Complex and dressing room facilities at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn, the home of the South Western Districts Cricket Board. The event was attended by Mr Alderman Jurie Harmse, Chairperson of the Strategic Services Portfolio Committee, who officially opened the complex together with Mr Rudy Claassen, President of the SWD Cricket Board, and Mr Maxwell Jordaan, Projects Chairman of The Sports Trust and Manager of Transformation of Cricket,South Africa.

At the Opening function were: Albertus Kennedy (CEO SWD Cricket), Ms Anita Matthews (Executive Director of the Sports Trust), Rudi Claassen (President SWD Cricket Board), Leigh Ann Paulick (the MC from Supersport), Carol Crawford (Marketing and Communication Manager Sports Trust), Maxwell Jordaan (Manager Amateur Cricket, Cricket South Africa and Projects Chairman of the Sports Trust) and Obakeng Oganne (Project Co-ordinator, Sports Trust).

The Sports Trust together with their Trustee, Cricket South Africa (CSA), have funded an amount of R 300,000 towards the completion of the 2nd phase (dressing room facilities) of the overall complex, and implemented this project on their behalf.

This project was started in April 2011 and the initial phase was funded by the NLDTF (National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund) to the amount of R 2.7 million. Phase 1 ? the construction of a Club house, President Suite and Offices was completed in October 2012. Phase 2, the construction of dressing rooms ? adjacent to the existing structure ? started in May 2012 and was completed in October 2012.

Alderman Jurie Harmse, Chairperson of the Strategic Services Portfolio Committee of the Oudtshoorn Municipality officially opens the complex. With him are Albertus Kennedy (CEO SWD Cricket), Maxwell Jordaan (Manager Amateur Cricket, Cricket South Africa and Projects Chairman of the Sports Trust) and Rudi Claassen (President SWD Cricket Board)

?The construction of the new facilities is a symbol of growth in an exciting period in the history of SWD Cricket and contributes towards the objective of SWD Cricket to become a full affiliate of Cricket SouthAfrica. The new facility will allow SWD Cricket to host high profile cricket matches and enhance the total image of cricket in the region?, says Mr Rudy Claassen, President of SWD Cricket Board.

The South Western Districts Cricket Board actively strives towards a situation where resources for cricket are accessible to all persons, and playing the game is encouraged in all communities, in order to fulfill the CSA Transformation policy, and uplift the image of cricket in the province.

?The Sports Trust?s role is to bring about equitable change in the sphere of sports and recreation. The assistance to South Western Districts Cricket bears testimony to that focus. The modern cricket facility in a rural area levels the playing fields with all of the SWD cricket rivals. This facility is a symbol of quality, pride and dignity ? reflective of the manner in which this cricket Board does its business. We wish them well in their on-field endeavours?, says Maxwell Jordaan, Projects Chairman for the Sports Trust and Transformation Manager at Cricket SA.

The SWD Cricket Facility is symbolically opened by cutting the ribbon by Alderman Jurie Harmse, Chairperson of the Strategic Services Portfolio Committee of the Oudtshoorn Municipality and Mr Maxwell Jordaan (Manager Amateur Cricket, Cricket South Africa and Projects Chairman of the Sports Trust). Also present were Albertus Kennedy (CEO SWD Cricket), John Komanisi (Vice-President), Simon Swigelaar (Honorary Life-President) and Rudi Claassen (President SWD Cricket)

Yanks re-sign Ichiro to 1-year deal

UPDATE: Despite what?Nikkan Sports is reporting, many are now saying that there is no deal in place between Ichiro and the Yankees. ?Joel Sherman just went so far as to say that a deal has not yet been seriously discussed.

So, yeah, stand by for further updates.

9:20 AM: It?s ?sign old guys day? in the Bronx. First was Andy Pettitte and now it?s Ichiro:

It felt weird to see Ichiro in anything but a Seattle Mariners? uniform, but he took to Yankee pinstripes quite nicely after last season?s trade,?hitting .322 with five home runs and a .794 OPS after coming over from the Mariners in July.

Ichiro is a mere three months younger than your creaky, grumpy and bald blogger here, but he still has game. Not the $17 million worth of game he was paid for in 2012, but at $5 million keeping him in New York makes a heck of a lot of sense.

Russian NGOs say new law makes them look like spies

Russian nongovernmental organizations are holding their breath a few days after a new law came into effect, requiring those who receive any amount of outside funding and engage in "public outreach" that authorities deem political to register as "foreign agents" and identify themselves as such in all their materials.

Mostly, the mood is defiant. The majority of groups with outside funding sources and some kind of political agenda have given notice that they will not submit to the law. They insist the "foreign agent" label is designed to make their work look to average Russians like espionage.

Mostly the mood is defiant. The majority of groups with outside funding sources and some kind of political agenda have given notice that they will not submit to the law. They insist the "foreign agent" label is designed to make their work look to average Russians like espionage. The law is part of what critics say is a broad legislative assault on Russian civil society, including a clampdown on political organizing and freshly enacted Soviet-style treason laws. Their sum effect will make it much harder for Russian NGOs to work in any realm deemed political by the Kremlin, to gather information, participate in public debate, and share their findings with the outside world.

RELATED: How much do you know about Russia? Take our quiz

That sets the stage for a confrontation in the courts, probably early in 2013, which could see pillars of Russian civil society such as the election monitor Golos, the anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International and Russia's largest human rights group, Memorial, and many others face legal shut down by authorities.

"This law says we must determine whether we should register as a foreign agent, and we are emphatically not going to register ourselves," says Grigory Melkonyants, deputy head of Golos. "We do not understand this law, it does not seem to be in the spirit of Russia's constitution and other legislation, its definitions are vague, and it doesn't describe any procedure for implementation. We're preparing a brief to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, we're willing to go to the Russian Constitutional Court. We will not agree to this."

There are more than 300,000 NGOs in Russia, most of them apolitical groups like charities, sports clubs, or cultural organizations. Just a handful have annoyed the authorities by engaging in public education and agitation around issues that can be politically sensitive, such as human rights, democracy awareness and electoral transparency, and corruption. Most of those groups have never been able to find sufficient funding in Russia, where wealthy donors are also sensitive to political concerns, and have traditionally turned to outside sources such as governments and international foundations to fund their work.

MIXED OPINIONS

One of those is the Russian branch of Transparency International, which was picketed last week by the pro-Kremlin United Russia party's youth group, with signs and slogans that urged it to accept the law and get itself registered as a "foreign agent."

"Under the law, the Ministry of Justice has to issue us with a warning that we are not complying with the law," says Anton Pominov, research director for the group. "If that happens, we will attempt to take it to the Constitutional Court, because we consider this law to be deeply unconstitutional. It's also wrong. When you call someone an "agent" in Russian, it has a very negative connotation, it means you are serving some master, and with us, that is simply not the case," he adds.

According to a public opinion survey conducted by the state-run VTsIOM agency in July, 64 percent of Russians say it's unacceptable in the political life of a country to have nonprofit organizations financed from abroad. Just 21 percent thought it was permissible.

Supporters of the law insist that it's just about bringing order to the tangled jungle of Russian NGO's, enforcing rules of financial transparency and that it's the right of any sovereign government to impose such controls.

"The idea of this law is common sense," says Leonid Syukiyanen, professor of law at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow. "I don't know of any big, complex country where the government is completely indifferent to the organizations working on its territory, involving themselves close to or on the political field, and receiving foreign funding. I wouldn't stand in opposition to the basic idea of the law if I were an NGO. But the problem here is that they do not have any mutual trust, there is no chance of a calm dialogue. Authorities adopted a flawed law, and NGOs are reacting in very inadequate ways," he says.

SPY LABEL

The most objectionable aspect of the new law, says Mr. Syukiyanen, is the tag NGOs will be forced to wear.

"Here in Russia, the term 'foreign agent' means spy. In the West, it may have more flexible meanings, but here it's purely negative. The drafters of this law should have come up with something different if they wanted to avoid creating such a perception," he says.

Activists say that most NGOs have been subject to strict accounting and reporting rules since the first tough NGO law was enacted back in 2005. Financial transparency can therefore not be the main goal of the new legislation.

"This is part of a whole set of new developments that will make it much harder for NGOs and international organizations to work here," says Anna Sevortyan, head of the Russian office of Human Rights Watch. "We are very worried about the new treason law that will potentially make human rights advocacy a formal pretext for treason charges.... Any Russian who works with or shares information with any international organization or foreign media group could be vulnerable, and that will make most people unwilling to talk to them. What we're seeing is that a signal is being sent, and the environment for NGOs and international organizations is getting much worse," she adds.

LONG BATTLE AHEAD

Most target NGOs are bracing for a fight, and say they will not wear the "agent" label no matter what happens. A few, such as the Moscow Helsinki Group, Russia's oldest human rights organization, says that it will refuse to accept any foreign funding if it comes to that.

"We haven't registered as a foreign agent, and we won't," says Lyudmilla Alexeyeva, head of the group. "We're not optimistic. If we go to court, knowing Russian courts, we'll probably be declared foreign agents. So, rather than be stripped of our registration and our right to take part in public discussion, we will have to give up foreign funding and look for funds here in Russia," she says.

Only a few say they're thinking of accepting the "foreign agent" label, and they're not happy about it.

"I consult with a number of small NGOs, mostly those engaged in charity and social aid, who say that if they're made to register they'll probably do it, because they need to go on working," says Ramil Akhmetgaliev, a lawyer with Agora, an interregional human rights NGO based in Kazan, in the Volga region of Tatarstan.

"But as for ourselves, Agora will not register itself voluntarily. We are not engaged in political activity, we are a public organization offering legal services to people who need them," he adds.

Arafat's remains said to be exhumed Tuesday

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) ? The remains of former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat will be exhumed Tuesday as part of a renewed investigation into his death, a Palestinian investigator said Saturday.

Arafat died in November 2004 in a French military hospital, a month after suddenly falling ill. Palestinian officials claim he was poisoned by Israel, but have not presented evidence. Israel has denied such allegations.

Earlier this year, the detection of a lethal radioactive substance in biological traces on Arafat's clothing sparked a new investigation. Tests were inconclusive, and experts said they need to check his remains to learn more.

On Tuesday, Swiss, French and Russian experts will take samples from Arafat's bones, said Tawfik Tirawi, who heads the Palestinian team investigating the death. They will examine the samples in their home countries.

Arafat will be reburied the same day with military honors, but the ceremony will be closed to the public, Tirawi told a news conference.

He did not specify when results would be announced but said the probe could take months.

Earlier this month, workers began prying open the concrete-encased tomb in Arafat's former government headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

The Palestinian Authority, the self-rule government in the West Bank, had hesitated before agreeing to exhume the remains, in part because of cultural and religious sensitivities.

Since mid-November, the gravesite has been surrounded with a blue tarpaulin and roads leading to the Arafat mausoleum were closed. Arafat is still widely revered in the Palestinian territories, and Palestinian officials said they don't want the process observed by media and others.

The new probe into his death began this summer, after a Swiss lab discovered traces of polonium-210, a deadly radioactive isotope, on clothes said to be Arafat's. The clothes were provided by Arafat's widow, Suha, and given to the lab by the Arab satellite TV station Al-Jazeera. Separately, Mrs. Arafat asked the French government to investigate, while the Palestinian Authority called in Russian experts.

Arafat's death has remained a mystery for many. While the immediate cause of death was a stroke, the underlying source of an illness he suffered in his final weeks has never been clear, leading to persistent conspiracy theories that he had cancer, AIDS or was poisoned.

Many in the Arab world believe Arafat, the face of the Palestinian independence struggle for four decades, was killed by Israel. Israel, which saw Arafat as an obstacle to peace, vehemently denies the charge.

There is no guarantee the exhumation will solve the mystery. Polonium-210 is known to rapidly decompose, and experts are divided over whether any remaining samples will be sufficient for testing.

Whoever Wears This Rocket-Powered Prosthetic Ankle Is Guaranteed Olympic Gold

When the International Olympic Committee approved the prosthetic blades that replace Oscar Pistorius's artificial legs when running, they set a precedent that could be hard to manage down the line. What was the committee's criteria for approving them, and why should one prosthetic be allowed and not another? There's no definitive answer yet, but it's a safe bet that a rocket-powered prosthetic ankle probably won't make the cut. More »

Six Franchise Facts for Starting a Franchise Business

Written by: Allen on November 21, 2012 @ 9:28 pm

Thousands of people are getting involved with franchises. If you?re thinking about becoming one of the many franchise owners, there are 6 facts to know before you jump in:

1. Franchising opportunities are everywhereFrachises Are Everywhere

When most people think franchising, they think fast food, but virtually every industry has begun offering franchise opportunities. Whether your passion is accounting, retail, or communications, there is a franchise opportunity out there that will interest you.

2. Franchises require an investment on your part

Starting up a franchise is often cheaper than starting up a business on your own. However, there are still start-up costs that you will be responsible for.

However, by starting a franchise, you will get to take advantage of bulk rates on things like your IT equipment, public relations services, and marketing materials. Because they are so big, franchisors tend to get discounts that ?normal? companies could never get on their own.

United States Franchise Investment

International Franchise Investment

3. Franchising means you don?t have to start from scratch

When you open up a franchise, you get to use a product, a brand name, and a business model that has already been successful. Start-up companies work for years to get that kind of recognition. But by franchising, you get a good reputation right off the bat.

Franchise Marketing Strategy

4. Franchisors are highly regulated

There are national regulation measures in place to make sure that franchisors are acting properly. Those rules can actually make it easier for you to start a franchise, instead of your own private company.
